Undergraduate Courses:

1. ACHM216A [Organic Chemistry I]: This is a three credit course in which students are introduced to nomenclature, structure, and bonding in organic compounds. Synthesis and reactions of representative classes of organic compounds, with stress on underlying principles of organic reaction mechanisms and stereochemistry are also covered. ACHM120N, ACHM121N, ACHM122A and ACHM122B (i.e. General chemistry lectures I and II, and their corresponding labs) are prerequisites to this course.

2. ACHM321 [Introduction to Experimental Physical Chemistry]: This is a team-taught course in which experimental illustration of physical principles and introduction to instrumentation is emphasized. Techniques of physical measurements, treatment of experimental data and generalization of results to illustrate fundamental principles is also emphasized. ACHM320 (i.e Introduction to Physical Chemistry) is a co-/prerequisite to this course.

Undergraduate/Graduate Courses:

3. ACHM440A/540A [Comprehensive Biochemistry]: This is three credit upper level undergraduate/graduate course in which the chemical characteristics of living matter, amino acids, polypeptides and proteins, enzyme mechanisms and kinetics, bioenergetics and the chemistry of metabolism are emphasized. Electron transport, biosynthesis and storage is also covered. Prerequisites of this course are ACHM216B or permission of instructor.

Graduate Courses:

4. CHM526 [Experimental Methods of Organic Structure Determination]: This is a two credit course in which modern methods of organic structure determination such as multinuclear NMR, 2D-NMR techniques, mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy are emphasized. There is also a focus on interpretation of spectral results obtained.

5. CHM626 [Special Topics in Organic Chemistry—Pharmacognosy]: This is a variable credit course in which the process by which pharmacologically active natural products are discovered, isolated and characterized is emphasized. An additional goal is to impart an understanding of natural product structures and the mechanisms of their biosynthesis.
